A very happy Pentecost

The Bible Alive has wonderful thoughts for us for the day of Pentecost:

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful with the fire of your love

By the grace and power of the liturgy the same Holy Spirit who was poured out upon the first believers on the Day of Pentecost is poured out on us today. As we open our hearts we will be renewed and refreshed in faith. Be expectant, be filled with hope and be prepared to receive the Holy Spirit. We are called to live by the Spirit, and the more we die to self and live for Christ the more we will walk in the Spirit.

Living life in the power of the Holy Spirit is at the very heart and essence of the Christian vocation. As we open up our lives to this power, we will begin to manifest the fruits and gifts of the Spirit…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self control.

Paul points to love as being the greatest fruit of the Spirit. One thing we need to be very clear about is that the Spirit can give us the power, the grace and the strength to live and act in a way that we of ourselves could never do.

The Spirit can give us the grace, for example, to forgive, when we know that of ourselves we could not. The Spirit can give us the power and courage to stand up and witness to our faith, when we know that of ourselves we could not. This is exactly what it means to live a life in the power of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit, the blessing of Pentecost , is given so that we can live lives of love. St Augustine said that love alone distinguishes the children of God from the children of the devil. He even went as far as to say, ‘Love and do what you will’. When we are born of the Spirit we are born to love and the power to love is the gift of the Spirit.

We have seen the true Light, we have received the heavenly Spirit, we have found the true faith: we adore the indivisible Trinity, who has saved us (Byzantine Liturgy, Pentecost Vespers)

Come Holy Spirit Refresh us all.
